Myles’s First Birthday Cake Smash at the Lumen Room | Dallas Family Potographer

There’s a special kind of joy that fills a room when you’re photographing someone you’ve known for years. I’ve had the honor of working alongside this mom (a wonderful wedding planner) more times than I can count, watching her bring beauty and thoughtful intention to each couple she serves. To then be invited back to photograph her son’s first birthday cake smash at the Lumen Room was a full-circle kind of gift. To see this sweet boy in the beginning, when it was just tiny toes and first yawns during his newborn session, and then to return as their little boy turns one created a quiet, lovely thread through time that made this day feel especially meaningful.

Cake smash sessions are about so much more than cake, though that moment of discovery and delight when a baby meets frosting for the first time is pure magic. These sessions are a celebration of a year filled with growth, laughter, new sounds, and widening eyes as the world became bigger day by day. We moved from tender newborn snuggles to heartfelt family portraits, gentle giggles, and then finally to a joyous dive into cake that made everyone smile and laugh together. Capturing those candid expressions and the genuine wonder in a child’s eyes is what this work is all about.

Working with families I already know adds another layer of connection to the images. There’s a comfort, a shared history that lets each photo breathe with authenticity and ease. The Lumen Room provided soft light and a calm backdrop that let Myles’s personality lead the session, and I cherished every moment of watching his mama beam as she watched him explore this milestone. These photos aren’t just snapshots of a first birthday; they’re a visual story of love and the beautiful pace of a year that seemed to pass in the blink of an eye.
