I love, love, love traditions. I have ever since I was a kid – I wanted us to establish traditions as a family, and I was meticulous about enforcing them. Every year, we followed the same rhythms around the holiday season that made it just feel like family, like love, and like the building of memories, legacy, and moments that I’ll never forget. From choosing & cutting down a Christmas tree together to leaving out cookies and milk to the friends & family gathering we always hosted on Christmas Eve to opening presents together in our pj’s on Christmas morning, I am endlessly grateful for the traditions I grew up with.
When my sister got married, holidays began to look slightly different, and when Matt and I got married, they continued to change. While change can be difficult, I’ve been so thankful for the way that our holiday seasons have evolved. We’ve cultivated new traditions, our family has grown, and we’ve embraced the newness that the Lord had for us each year. This coming holiday season will be the third one that Matt and I have had as a married couple. While we continue some of our larger family traditions, we’ve began to establish some new ones of our own, that we hope to pass down to our kids one day. Here are some of my very favorites…
Every year around Christmas time, we get holiday coffee and walk around Highland Park Village & the SMU campus (where we met!) at night when all of the lights are on the trees… it’s so magical! We string lights in our living room and snuggle up to watch Christmas movies, and between Thanksgiving & Christmas, we watch all the Harry Potter movies. We set up an advent wreath and remember the beauty that is the birth of Jesus throughout the advent season, and on Christmas morning, we read Luke 2. As we near the New Year, we have a coffee & dessert date where we dream about the following year, set goals, and choose our word for the year.
Finally, each year we send out Christmas cards and write a letter to go along with it! It’s such a sweet way to reflect about all that the year has held, and look forward to the adventures & dreams that we have for the coming year. We hang the holiday cards we receive on our refrigerator, and not only is it a fun way to keep up with everyone, it’s a reminder to us of how lucky we are to have such an incredible community of people in our lives.
As we started to look through designs online to choose our card for this year, I decided to share all my favorites with you! So, grab your favorite holiday beverage (I’ll take a peppermint mocha, please!), pretend it’s icy outside, look through all the possibilities, and dream a little bit about your own holiday traditions.
